What is a Coconut Mushroom?

The coconut mushroom stands out as a classic delight with a distinct charm. Shaped like a real mushroom, this toasted sweet treat features a chewy brown cap enveloped in desiccated coconut, paired with a white fondant stalk, creating a unique and nostalgic experience.

The sweet was invented in the early 1960s and does not contain any real mushrooms - that really would be a distinctive taste! Thankfully, it also has no connection to the hallucinogenic fungus known as magic mushrooms, which became popular in that decade.

If you appreciate the delightful taste of coconut in your sweets and haven't yet savoured the pleasure of coconut mushrooms, you're truly missing out. It's highly recommended to indulge in them and discover the unique joy they bring to your taste buds.

Where can I buy coconut mushrooms in the UK?

Coconut Mushrooms are available to buy from a wide range of online UK stores, but they are not readily available in supermarkets.

The biggest choice we have seen in on Amazon.co.uk, where they are available loose, in sharing bags and in gift jars. One of the best-loved brands on here is Berryman's Finest Confectioners, which are sold in a gift jar.

Molly's Mixtures sell Kingsway coconut mushrooms in 200g, 500g and 1kg bags, bulk buy 3kg bags, a gift cube and jars.

We are disappointed to learn that Asda no longer sells them. Indeed, none of the major British supermarkets stock them either in-store on online, and these include Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl. You may be able to buy them at certain times in bags from Poundland, but my local store does not have them in stock as I write.

Best rated Coconut Mushrooms

Our favourite brand is Taveners, a British brand which always tastes very fresh and delicious, and has a pleasant soft but chewy texture - just like back in the day. They also contain no artificial colours or flavours and are gluten-free. They can be bought in a variety of sizes from a small 120g pack to a huge 3kg bulk buy bag.

These are actually hard to find in the shops these days, but can be bought from Amazon UK in a full range of sizes.
